At this time of year, we are often focused on getting everything done. Finishing exams, school functions, work functions, planning holidays. What if we stopped to pause and change our focus to how can I have true connection in each moment? Instead of what are we going to do, focus on how will I get connection in this moment?

Often, we focus on the logistics – where we are going or meeting, who we are meeting with, what time, what will we be doing, etc. Ask yourself: 

  • What does this person mean to you?
  • How can you tell them?
  • What do you appreciate about them?
  • How can you show them how much you care?
  • What do you think they need?

Approach each interaction from this perspective even with people that are not as close to you.

We can do the same with our children. How can you focus on creating true connection with them each day? It is all about being a bit more present and intentional in each moment. It can be done in small ways:

  • An extra moment or pause when you hug your children and feel your love for them in that moment
  • A moment to listen to what they are saying even when you are in a hurry, or their story doesn’t make sense
  • An extra “I love you”, pausing to see how they receive that
  • What small thing can you do to surprise them? Fetch them a bit early, take them to the park, make them hot chocolate, create a moment of laughter


Taking time to do this intentionally a few times a day increases your happiness level and builds deeper connection. It is the people in our lives, not our experiences that make lives worthwhile
